Victor Hugo was forced
into exile during the reign
of Napoleon III and lived
in Jersey Island for three
years.The spiritistic writer
Delphine Gay de Girardin
visited him in 1853 and
held séances. By laying
hands on it, a table started
to move, spelling out
words there. Hugo himself
never laid his hand on the
table but sat near it and
asked questions.
When he was present, the
outcomes of the sessions
shifted to a higher level
he talked to the spirits of
Plato, Dante, Shakespeare,
Molière, Racine, Byron
and others.
Sometimes also allegoric
figures and fabled creatures
got in touch: Death, Poetry,
Criticism, The Lion of
Androcles.
